D-291b VICTOR Model E rear-mount disc phonograph with dataplate stamped "E", # 53374, with Exhibition style sound box (triangular needle hole) and an 8-inch turntable. Being an instrument made in late 1902-1904 it is a beautiful example with no apparent damages. It has a strong two-spring motor that works very well, though during operation the motor is a bit noisy and runs IRREGULARLY (not at an even 78 rpm) - please be aware of this!. This very early black and brass horn appears to be very clean with no noticable dents. The oak wood case is very nice even though it has been refinished and the metal ware on the motor board freshly nickeled. This is a very nice early example of what eventually became the Victor Monarch Junior, also known as a "Victor II" (not to be confused with the later "Improved Victor II" that had the 12" turn table and taller case).
